Every year I ride well over 1000 miles on my electric cargo bike in New York City, a good chunk of which with my daughter, Gigi, on board. Most mornings I drop my 8-year old daughter to the school and pick her up on that same eBike. I also ride all around this beautiful city from Governer’s Island to the Bronx Zoo. I love it, but I am very much aware that not every trip is as safe as it could be. From cars parked in Bike lanes, to paths that do not connect without getting off the bike, to lanes that suddenly stop, or no lanes at all. I know that there are areas that many bikers would not feel safe in. We would like to do everything we can to change this.
Safe biking options also create a safer environment for pedestrians. There are a lot of infrastructure changes that would be needed, but we don’t need to spend huge amounts to make them. Making this happen can be as simple as having the will to make these changes. Once we have a plan to use best practices from places that would like to emulate we can then just use this format each time a road or intersection needs a refresh anyway.
